Puppets, a way to overcome childhood shyness.
Childhood is a crucial time in a person’s life; it is during this stage that some personality traits begin to form. Although many of these traits are reinforced or modified during adolescence, childhood is the foundation for many of them, including shyness.
Childhood shyness.
Studies show that shy children are both born and made. Jerome Kagan, an American psychologist, conducted a series of studies to determine the genetic origin of shyness. One of his conclusions, after analyzing a group of 400 four-month-old babies, was that 20% of children are born with a predisposition toward shyness. These children tend to be quieter, watchful, and restless in unfamiliar situations. However, with positive intervention from parents and the environment, more than half of these children overcome this genetic tendency. In fact, Kagan and his team also concluded that 20% of children who do not show shy traits in childhood may later develop this personality due to negative social experiences or unsuitable family conditions.
Tips for dealing with it:
Don’t force: Some parents react by forcing their children to socialize even when they are reluctant. This backfires and only makes them retreat further into their shyness.
Overprotection: Shielding children from everything is not the best approach either. Children, like adults, need to face situations appropriate for their age to continue their development.
Don’t label: Phrases like “he/she is very shy” are not recommended because they avoid the problem. It’s better to give the child time to get used to the situation until they handle it normally.
Sociable parents: The example set by parents is very important; sociable parents usually raise sociable children.
Opportunities: Family gatherings, meetings with friends who have children of the same age, etc. These situations help the child get used to such commitments until they no longer have any problem.
Recognize: Valuing positive behaviors that help overcome shyness is a huge boost for children and can help them overcome it quickly.
Puppets enter the scene.
It must be understood that children often cannot express with words what they feel and think, making it harder for them to communicate how they feel because they themselves do not know or understand it. Puppets are a perfect “tool” to channel ideas, thoughts, emotions, and everyday life matters. They are a means to gain ease in dramatization, giving children the chance to create life situations with their minds and hands. This stimulates creativity and ease in real situations. Improvising dialogues and scripts in which they create the stories helps them overcome shyness and develop confidence and concentration—all while learning through an artistic medium that continues to foster their creativity.
