As is known, babies generally get their first teeth at 6 months of age, although this may be delayed until nearly one year. The first teeth to appear are the lower incisors, and soon the others will start coming in until the baby completes their temporary or “milk” teeth set of 20 teeth.
We will notice that these teeth are spaced apart, which may not look very aesthetic for the baby’s smile. This is a common characteristic in babies and does not necessarily indicate a problem requiring orthodontic treatment. As the teeth finish coming in, they will gradually move closer together, reducing the spacing.
Finally, when the temporary teeth are replaced by permanent teeth during childhood, these larger teeth will fill the oral cavity. Only then can it be determined whether there is a problem with spacing between teeth, or even teeth that are too close and may overlap. Whatever the case, it can be corrected with orthodontic treatment, but until that point is reached, it is not recommended to perform any treatment unless the dentist advises it.
Most common teething discomforts
Not all babies experience them: some show signs of teething, while others seem unaware.
- Increased drooling because teething stimulates saliva production.
- Drool moistens, irritates, and reddens the cheeks and mouth area.
- Slight cough when choking on saliva.
- Tendency to bite everything they find: their own hand, the rattle...
- Gum pain, even extending to the cheek and, in worst cases, the ears. This mainly happens with the first tooth. Because of their larger size, premolars and molars also tend to cause more discomfort.
- Refusal to eat: they ask for breast or bottle but soon let go because sucking increases the pain.
Relieving pain from the first teeth
- If the little one is restless, it will help to have nearby something to rub their gums on, some water or fresh milk, a hard and cold food (like an apple), or a cold teething ring.
- Cold will reduce gum inflammation and relieve discomfort. If these measures are insufficient, you can rub the gum with a few drops of the same painkiller used for lowering fever.
Most children quickly get used to the unpleasant sensations caused by teething and tolerate them quite well.
