Recreation is all those activities where several participants interact, socialize, and learn together. While its main function is fun and entertainment, it also stimulates the body and emotions. It is recommended that children participate in recreational games since these promote and reinforce knowledge that generally can only be acquired in this type of social environment.
Although games do not necessarily have to be aimed at teaching certain social and personal guidelines, there is nothing wrong with encouraging them in a fun way so that for children, understanding behaviors or reasoning is anything but tedious—since directly exposing these could become boring or incomprehensible for them.
Here are some games
1. Sack races
Sack races are perfect for children to play outdoors, even better if it’s in the countryside. It is a competitive game that develops strength and works agility and coordination. As is known, participants must get into sacks (potato sacks, large bags, or pillowcases) up to their waist and follow a set course. If desired and if children are big enough, obstacles can be added to the track.
To move forward, they are only allowed to jump. If in a group, they must return and hand the sack to the next teammate who will take the relay.
2. The handkerchief game
This is a very simple game with straightforward rules and requires only a large group of children and a handkerchief.
First, two teams must be formed. Each team stands on one side of the room or playing space, with an imaginary line drawn in the middle at equal distance. Then, numbers are assigned to all team members.
The referee (preferably an adult) stands between the two teams holding the handkerchief and calls out the numbers of the participants who must go for the handkerchief. The player who arrives first wins and consequently, the loser is disqualified.
Each player who manages to bring the handkerchief to their zone earns a point. The main goal of each team is to get the highest number of points possible to win the game.
3. Hot potato
This is a game of observation and reaction. To play, children sit on the floor side by side in a circle, while an adult leads.
During the game, the children must pass the ball among themselves as fast as possible while music plays or, alternatively, a child or adult counts inside the circle. When counting stops, the player holding the ball is disqualified.
The game continues until only one child remains, who will be the winner. To make the activity more entertaining, variations can be introduced, such as passing the ball only to named players. The goal here is speed and reaction, plus it encourages cooperation and cognitive development.
4. The never-ending story
This last activity is ideal for stimulating imagination: the never-ending story is an oral game perfect for training children’s minds.
It begins with one participant telling a story, then the next must add a phrase to it, always starting from the beginning. The idea is to recite the sentence one after another until someone makes a mistake.
Remember that recreational games are played for fun and contribute to the physical, social, and mental development of children and that in the future they could be a great advantage when defining personality.
