Cuts, scratches, burns, wounds, acne, and even pregnancy can leave scars on the skin.
Scars appear when the skin is injured and new tissue forms to cover it—like a patch of skin born to heal the wound. It's part of the body’s incredible self-healing process. However, although they serve a restorative purpose after skin trauma, scars aren’t always aesthetically pleasing, and while they may fade over time, they never fully disappear.
This article shares natural ways to reduce their appearance.
Natural treatments for scars
Ideally, the goal isn’t to hide the scars but to get rid of them. So, we search for treatments that can help reduce them effectively.
Aloe Vera
- Remove the dark green "skin" from the smoother side of the aloe leaf.
- Extract the light green, almost clear gel.
- Apply the gel directly to your scar in circular motions.
- After 30 minutes, rinse with cool fresh water.
- Repeat twice a day.
Vitamin E
- Open a vitamin E capsule over the scar and squeeze the oil onto it (you may need more than one capsule to fully cover the scar).
- Massage the oil into and around the scar for 10 minutes.
- After about 20 minutes, rinse the oil off with warm water.
- Repeat at least 3 times a day.
Honey
- Before bedtime, cover your scar with a layer of honey.
- Wrap the scar with a bandage.
- Leave it on overnight.
- In the morning, remove the bandage and rinse the honey off with warm water.
- Do this every night as part of your routine.
Coconut Oil
- Warm a few tablespoons of coconut oil until it becomes more liquid.
- Massage the oil into the scar for about 10 minutes.
- Let your skin absorb it for at least an hour.
- Repeat 2 to 4 times daily.
Apple Cider Vinegar
- Mix 4 tablespoons of distilled water with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
- Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and gently apply it to the scar.
- Let it dry.
- Do this every night before bed, and rinse the area in the morning.
Lavender and Olive Oil
- Mix three drops of lavender essential oil with 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.
- Massage the mixture into the scar area for about 5 minutes.
- Leave the oil on for about 30 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Repeat this process at least 3 times a day.
Lemon
- Cut a piece of fresh lemon.
- Gently rub the juicy side on the scar, squeezing the juice onto it.
- Relax for about 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
- Do this daily around the same time.
Potatoes
- Cut a medium-thick round slice of potato.
- Using a circular motion, rub the slice over your scar.
- Once it begins to dry, discard and use a new slice.
- Continue rubbing and replacing slices for about 20 minutes, then let the scar dry for about 10 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water.
- Repeat this process at least once a day.
Rosehip and Frankincense
- Mix equal parts of rosehip essential oil and frankincense essential oil.
- Massage the blend onto the scar.
- Wait 45 minutes before gently rinsing the area with warm water.
- Follow this process three times a day.
Baking Soda
- Mix distilled water little by little into 2 tablespoons of baking soda until a paste forms.
- Moisten your scar with distilled water and apply the paste to the damp scar.
- Hold the paste in place with a warm compress for 15 minutes.
- Rinse the area and repeat daily.
